For Gabriel Loonsfoot (Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians), summer 2025 has been a season of cultural pride, youth engagement, and leadership on both national and tribal stages. At the National UNITY Conference in San Diego, Gabriel connected with Native youth from across the country, representing the Midwest region and his community with honor.

Soon after, he traveled to Wayland, Michigan, for the Annual Potawatomi Gathering, hosted by the Gun Lake Band of Potawatomi Indians, where he ran for the title of Mr. Potawatomi (results pending). During the Potawatomi Youth Summit, Gabriel introduced himself and spoke about UNITY’s purpose and mission, inspiring young attendees to see themselves as leaders. “Representing my community at UNITY and the Potawatomi Gathering was an honor. Sharing our purpose and uplifting youth reminded me how powerful our voices are when we come together.”

Gabriel also brought energy and connection to the Youth Summit by leading icebreakers that encouraged participation and relationship-building. In the Parade of Nations, he proudly carried the UNITY Midwest Flag alongside his youth council, then joined his Youth Council Drum Group to share songs with the community.

As the Midwest Regional Representative on the National UNITY Council Executive Committee, Gabriel helps represent the UNITY Network so that common concerns are studied and addressed with a positive and unified voice. He works with leaders across the country to strengthen youth councils, create spaces for meaningful dialogue, and ensure the voices of Midwest Native youth are heard at the national level. By representing his community in both UNITY’s national network and the cultural heart of the Potawatomi Gathering, Gabriel continues to uplift Native youth, foster unity, and carry forward the traditions that connect past, present, and future generations.
