What began as an idea to celebrate Earth Day became a month-long movement of environmental stewardship and community care, thanks to the leadership and initiative of the CAYC (Cheyenne & Arapaho Youth Council). Instead of limiting their efforts to one day, CAYC officers and members declared April “Earth Month” and launched a widespread community clean-up campaign across all communities within the tribal jurisdiction.
With 53 youth participating throughout the month—and the effort continuing into May due to storm-related debris—CAYC members took charge by identifying areas in need of care and organizing clean-ups either individually or in groups. Locations included local parks and recreation areas, school playgrounds, powwow grounds, elders’ yards, and neighborhood spaces.
Each participant was asked to submit a Community Service Report documenting their work, ensuring that every act of service was recognized and reflected upon. This not only helped youth build personal responsibility and organizational skills, but also created a powerful sense of ownership in keeping their communities clean and safe.
This project exemplifies social wellness in action—uniting youth through service, promoting environmental respect, and fostering pride in community. CAYC members demonstrated that leadership doesn’t always happen on a stage; sometimes, it happens with a trash bag in hand, quietly making a difference where it matters most.
The success and extended impact of this initiative show that CAYC youth are not just celebrating Earth Month—they’re leading it.
