This September, Néepa Hyde stepped into a new chapter as she began her 10th grade year—taking on the challenge of advanced coursework while staying committed to her role as a UNITY Earth Ambassador. Balancing academics and leadership wasn’t easy, but Néepa approached the transition with determination and purpose. “This September was truly an adjustment… I am learning to manage taking all advanced courses,” she shared, reflecting on the growth that comes with new responsibilities.

Despite a demanding school schedule, Néepa remained deeply connected to her community through meaningful cultural events. On September 7, she worked with the Prairie Island Indian Community at their annual Wild Rice Festival, where she demonstrated traditional harvesting practices and shared the significance of manoomin—a sacred food for Great Lakes tribes. “Highlighting traditional food sources from the Great Lakes region is truly important to me,”she said. Through this experience, she not only taught others but also expanded her own knowledge, learning about the differences between processed and organic wild rice and deepening her understanding of traditional food systems.

Her civic engagement continued on September 9 at the Indigenous Food Tasting event hosted at the Minneapolis Indian Center, where she supported local chefs and helped serve the community. Working alongside Ho-Chunk chef Anne Thundercloud, Néepa assisted in preparing and sharing a hominy salad while engaging with attendees. “The event inspired me… I had the opportunity to learn from chefs and taste their cuisine,” she reflected. Events like this highlight the importance of Indigenous food sovereignty, showcasing how traditional ingredients and recipes continue to nourish communities today.

Through both events, Néepa contributed to service projects that centered education, food access, and cultural preservation. Whether demonstrating harvesting techniques or helping serve meals, her work emphasized the importance of sharing knowledge and creating spaces where community members can connect through food and tradition.

Even as the rest of the month focused on adjusting to school, Néepa remained grounded in gratitude and purpose. “These opportunities filled my heart as I was able to connect with my community while adjusting to the school year,” she shared. Her ability to balance personal growth with community involvement reflects a strong foundation of leadership and resilience.

The UNITY Earth Ambassador Program continues to uplift leaders like Néepa Hyde who are navigating school, service, and cultural responsibility with dedication and heart. This year’s cohort represents Indigenous youth who are learning, leading, and giving back at every stage of their journey. Through food sovereignty, education, and community connection, they are building a future rooted in tradition, knowledge, and collective strength.
