Leadership is also about knowing when to pause, reflect, and restore. This November, Jamie Crowe of the Pueblo of Tesuque modeled a powerful form of servant leadership by prioritizing mental well-being while staying connected to community and culture.
As a Southwest Executive Committee Member of the National UNITY Council, Jamie balanced personal challenges, academic coursework, and community engagement with intention and resilience. Even while navigating difficult moments, they remained committed to showing up in meaningful ways.
On November 12, Jamie returned home to the Pueblo of Tesuque to spend feast day with relatives. Feast days hold deep cultural and spiritual significance, serving as times of prayer, gratitude, and community unity. For Jamie, this gathering provided a moment of healing and reflection.
They shared, “Being home for my feast day allowed me to feel at peace and collected.” In a season of personal growth and emotional processing, that reconnection to community became grounding. Jamie reflected further, “It is always healing for me to be around my community and relatives. I am so grateful to be from my Pueblo.”
Taking time to care for one’s mental wellness is an essential part of sustainable leadership. By prioritizing reflection and cultural grounding, Jamie demonstrated that strength comes from staying rooted in identity and community support systems.
The National UNITY Council (NUC) exists to represent Native youth with a unified voice while developing leadership skills rooted in Native heritage and teachings. UNITY recognizes that effective leaders are not only active in service projects and civic engagement, but also mindful of personal wellness and cultural connection. Native youth—including Native Hawaiian and Alaskan Natives—thrive when they are supported spiritually, emotionally, and academically.
The NUC represents over 300 affiliated youth councils nationwide and provides a forum where Native youth can study issues, strengthen identity, and build leadership capacity. Jamie’s November reminds us that reflection and renewal are part of that journey.
As a Southwest Regional Representative on the National UNITY Council Executive Committee, Jamie plays a vital role in uplifting youth voices while collaborating with fellow representatives and Co-Presidents to guide national priorities. Through personal resilience, cultural grounding, and continued engagement, Jamie exemplifies leadership rooted in gratitude, healing, and unwavering pride in their Pueblo community.
