Sharing Culture, Teaching Youth, and Giving Back Through UNITY

In November, Ethan Hedgepeth (Cherokee, Tuscarora), Executive Committee Member for the Southeast Region, stayed actively engaged on campus and in the broader community through cultural education, outreach, and advocacy.

Ethan participated in several events hosted by the Native American organization at East Carolina University, including a Craft & Chat, the organization’s monthly meeting, and a visit to a local elementary school. During the school visit, Ethan helped teach students about powwows and the importance of protecting the environment, using culture as a tool for learning and connection.

He also attended the Native American Heritage Powwow in Raleigh, where he helped share information about UNITY and its mission. Reflecting on the experience, Ethan shared that speaking about UNITY at the powwow was especially meaningful, as UNITY has played an important role in his own growth—and this was his way of giving back.

In addition, Ethan participated in NCNAYO’s monthly meeting, continuing to build relationships with Native youth leaders across North Carolina and the Southeast.

Through campus involvement, youth education, and powwow outreach, Ethan continues to uplift Native voices, strengthen community connections, and represent the National UNITY Council’s mission of empowering Native youth to lead with culture, purpose, and pride.
