Meet your 2025-2026 Southern Plains NUC Regional Representative Candidates – Ryan Murdock

Ryan Murdock

Ryan Murdock, 17

Tribe: Quechan

Youth Council: Wahzhazhe youth council

Ryan Murdock is a proud member of the Fort Yuma Quechan Tribe, currently residing on the Osage Nation reservation in Pawhuska, Oklahoma. Growing up, Ryan experienced firsthand the challenges faced by many Indigenous communities, surrounded by the struggles of drugs and alcohol alongside the enduring richness of his cultural traditions. From a young age, singing and cultural expression have been important ways for him to stay connected to his people.

Ryan noticed early on that many of the difficulties Indigenous communities face often go unspoken, with few willing to stand up and advocate for their people. This silence has inspired him to become a strong voice for his culture and community.

After graduating from high school, Ryan plans to attend Haskell Indian Nations University to study Indigenous history. His aspirations extend beyond academics; he hopes to one day run for tribal council and serve as a leader who truly understands the pressing issues Native youth face today, such as high dropout rates, suicide, and substance abuse.

For Ryan, leadership is about action and setting an example. He aims to show that there is hope and opportunity beyond the reservation and that Indigenous youth have multiple paths to success. With a vision of a brighter future for Indigenous people, he is dedicated to helping build that future.

Through his leadership, Ryan hopes to strengthen his community and create a better future for the children, grandchildren, and elders of his tribe. He is deeply committed to protecting his people and reviving the spirit and strength that have always defined Indigenous communities.

Understanding that Indigenous voices have often been silenced, Ryan believes strongly in the resilience and warrior spirit of his people. He is focused on empowering the next generation to stand up for their communities and lead with integrity.

Ryan’s ultimate goal is to become chief of his tribe. He sees his involvement with UNITY as an important opportunity to learn, grow, and serve, helping to restore both the spiritual and physical well-being of his community.
