Native Village of Eyak Tribal Youth Council Crafts Hand-Designed Drums for Sobriety Celebration

In a powerful expression of culture, healing, and community support, seven members of the Native Village of Eyak Tribal Youth Council came together to make and design traditional drums for the Sobriety Celebration in Cordova. These handcrafted drums were contributed to the event’s auction table, serving as both cultural items and meaningful symbols of wellness and resilience.

The process of creating the drums was deeply spiritual for the youth. From stretching the hide to painting the designs, every step was intentional and rooted in tradition. The act of drum-making provided the youth with a hands-on opportunity to connect with their heritage, reflect on their personal wellness journeys, and contribute to a cause that uplifts individuals and families striving for sobriety.

The drums, once completed, were displayed and auctioned at the celebration—where community members gathered to honor sobriety, healing, and the power of collective support. Each drum carried not just artistic value, but a spiritual message of strength and cultural pride, resonating deeply with attendees.

This project aligned with the youth council’s focus on spiritual wellness, allowing members to engage in cultural practices that foster identity, purpose, and emotional healing. Through their creativity and dedication, the youth honored their ancestors and supported a healthier future for their community.

The Native Village of Eyak Tribal Youth Council continues to lead by example—using cultural arts not only to express themselves, but to strengthen community ties and celebrate the journey toward wellness and sobriety.
