On September 22, 2023, the Poarch Creek Youth Council hosted “Taste of the South” in Atmore, Alabama—a culturally rich event that used food as a powerful medium to educate the community about Creek traditions and heritage. With 10–12 youth participating, the event emphasized social wellness by fostering connection, identity, and intergenerational learning through traditional cuisine.
Youth council members shared recipes, prepared dishes, and told the stories behind each food item, offering attendees a deeper understanding of Muscogee (Creek) culture. Dishes rooted in tradition helped spark meaningful conversations about history, values, and the continued importance of food in cultural preservation.
More than just a food event, Taste of the South served as a platform for cultural pride and community engagement. It allowed youth to take leadership roles in teaching others while also strengthening their ties to tribal identity.
Through this gathering, the Poarch Creek Youth Council showed that sharing a meal can also mean sharing a legacy—nourishing the spirit of community and the strength of tradition.
