Washington State University’s Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine offered the Nmryaqs Post-Baccalaureate Pathway for Enrolled Tribal Members to support aspiring Native physicians.
Nmryaqs, pronounced en-MURR-ee-Ahks, means “medicine road” or “path to medicine” in the Spokane dialect of Interior Salish. The free 10-month program is designed to support the recruitment, training, retention, and graduation of medical students who are enrolled Tribal members.
Each year, WSU selects up to four scholars who are enrolled members of federally recognized Tribes and meet the program’s admission requirements. Participants receive support through biomedical science coursework, Indigenous health and wellness, cultural engagement, MCAT preparation, clinical observation, research experiences, anatomy, academic skills, and preparation for medical school success.
The program is held at the WSU Spokane Campus from September to June. Benefits include free cost of attendance, a monthly stipend to help with living expenses, mentorship from faculty and medical students, and conditional acceptance to the WSU Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine for students who successfully complete the program requirements.
The application deadline was May 1, 2026, at 11:59 PM PST, and applications are now closed.
This pathway is an important opportunity to support more enrolled Tribal members in becoming physicians and helping strengthen health care in Native communities.
